Just wondering how many others here experience a mechanical break down due to engine over heating? On Saturday 2023 GW S3, which has been flawless, broke down because of a stuck thermostat. I have been told that these thermostats are on backorder with about a 45+ days wait, but still no hard ETA. They are telling me that this is popping up as a national issue.
Anyways, very disappointing, but I am in a loaner Wagoneer provided by the dealership.

Anyone else hear about this or experience it?

Update: on the thermostat, I am told that this is a nationwide issue and parts are on back order. ETA is now in June.
Needless to say, I’ve asked Jeep to buy back the vehicle.
I’ve had lots of problems with my 2023 Jeep Grand Wagoneer. I have 20k miles and it’s been to the shop like 6 times.

Any luck with getting the dealership to buy it back?

GW went down yesterday and had to be towed in for thermostat issue. Another regular Wagoneer was brought in about a hour before ours with same issue.
was told they can only submit order request for one a week. Thought this was gonna be a two week deal, but sounds like much longer. To ad insult there are no loaners available from jeep and not a rental car availble within a hour drive.

@KipinFl sorry to hear you have joined the club. My understanding is that everyone who has the HO hurricane will eventually have the failure as it is a poor design.
I did not get my loaner from the dealer, but did get it from enterprise at $90/day. Dealer did pay and is paying for it, so no out of pocket.
I have an attorney lined up and will be submitting the actual letter stating my intentions on the lemon.

Hello all,
Quick update on my 23 GW S3. Part was received in 3 weeks and installed. The driver side mirror was also replaced.
The car was returned back to be with the driver side mirror falling off, the inside where they had to remove door panel, they scratched it all up. Also 3 of the rims sustained curb rash wile at the dealership.

Fast forward after three days of driving it. 90% of the antifreeze is gone. There are no external leaks. So my guess it that there is another problem.

Gosh, ownership was great until it was not and now it is problem after problem.

Just wanted to share some data on this from a poll I did in the FB group around thermostat issues on the Hurricane.

Of 29 respondents with I6 HO (GW), 3 reported having issues with the thermostat and 26 reported no issues. (10.3%)
Of 55 respondents with the I6 SO (W), 3 reported having issues with the thermostat and 52 reported no issues. (5.5%)

Anecdotal reports seem to confirm that the Hurricane stuck thermostat issue seems much more promiment on the HO version, but the SO is not entirely immune.

Just thought I'd add a somewhat related data point to this conversation in case it helps anyone.. I bought my '22 GWS2O used, and warranty records show thermostat replacement around 10k miles.

At around 20k miles, I got a high coolant temperature warning, and pulled the car over and let it cool off. It was relatively low on coolant, about a 1.5" below min fill line. I found a dealer and purchased the appropriate coolant and filled to max-fill line. After this the car was drivable, but only for about 6-7 miles at a time as coolant temps would approach 240-250F. Temperatures would decrease by a few degrees at standstill (stop lights, etc..)

After the dealer looked at it they found a small leak in a hose leading to the thermostat (part # 68448246AB). They did note coolant was low, so it was definitely going somewhere. The part was on a slight back-order, will take a few days to arrive, but hopefully should be resolve after that. Car is still with the dealer (been about 5 days now), but will update once it's resolved.

Side note, they did diagnose a failed auxiliary battery and replaced it under warranty. I had noticed inconsistent auto start stop activation. Sometimes it just never activated despite me never manually turning the feature off, which was fine by me, but at other times it would auto start/stop, so I'm guessing this is related.

Typically if the 3.0L is driven to destruction because of over heating there will be virtually no compression, the engine will no longer run. What causes these thermostats to 'stick' is part of the plastic arm that moves the ball valve (these are not your typical spring over diaphragm style T-Stats) breaks, and the ball valve simply no longer moves because there is nothing connecting the wax pellet motor to the ball valve itself.

Warning ignorance on full display here! What is the first thing an owner should expect indicates a thermostat issues (e.g. leaking, loss of power, smoke, etc.....) Does anything exacerbate the thermostat going bad......driving hard, high revs, mileage, etc.?

Engine temp will shoot through the roof leading to permanent engine damage if thermostat is stuck closed. If the thermostat is stuck open, the vehicle in-cabin heater will not heat the vehicle, but I found additional information on Reddit:
"Your car is meant to be ran at operating temperature. Since your thermostat is stuck open, it’s taking much longer than usual to get to that temperature. This alone is going to be hard on nearly every moving component in your engine.
On top of that, your car attempts to warm itself quicker by advancing engine timing and using a richer air fuel mixture. Both of these things are going to be bad for gas mileage.
Nothing is going to fail immediately, but you’re taking miles off of its lifespan the Longer you spend outside of proper operating temperature

today our 13000 mile wagoneer had this overheating issue and broke down on the road. not sure if its related to this thermostat issue but probably highly likely.. Really sucks as this car has been having issues here and there and now it completely broke down. Started questioning my decision of going with this purchase.

2023 GW S3 1 year old just got out of the shop after being there for 34 days. It randomly overheated and left me and my kids stranded. I had never had an issue with it until then.
Dealership says radiator hose was busted. Took two weeks to get that part. Then they found the thermostat was stuck. A week and a half more went by and my vacation came and went while my GW was in the dealership’s shop. We get back after being gone 10 days in a rental paid for by the dealership, it was still broken. They had found another coolant hose that was missing a clip and melted together. I didn’t get my car back for 34 days. Now
I swear I hear a louder motor sound on the passenger side. This car has everything I want-but I hope I don’t have to worry about being stranded somewhere.

I am in Canada with GW S3 and recently got a "customer satisfaction notice 26B" stating that the thermostat needs to be replaced. reading through the blog it sounds like scary stuff. I got the HO 3L engine as well. got only 12km (7.45miles) on it owned it for 9-10months now. I am bit worried since this sounds like a ticking time bomb. but reading through all this it sounds like when the truck was fixed at the dealer it came back with even more issues? i wonder is this because the engine order heated? of the service folks just dont know how to complete the replacement properly. this is a very complex engine does anyone know where the thermostat ball valve drive pin is located? is this something that can be accessed easily or they have to remove alot of equipment to get to it. like i said i have zero confidence with the dealers ability to work on this complex engine. they might make things worst. But at the same time its too risky to drive the car. what sort of millage you guys see before there is a fialure?

The thermostat is attached to the water pump (10 in the illustration)
The published service procedure has the water pump removed from the engine to service the thermostat. Removal of the water pump will entail removal of the A/C Compressor for access.

An experienced technician will simply access the thermostat through the left front wheel housing and R&R the thermostat without first removing the water pump. Takes about an hour.

thats wishful thinking lol! dealers run a business not a charity they need to make money. you will not get a new engine. here is what going to happen. if it overheats, you will have to tow your car to the dealer, may take a month to get the parts, they will replace the thermostat part only. they will not take the time to see if the overheating had cause other issues. your car will run, you may notice that your engine does not run the same way, but at least you have your car back after 2 months. after a while something will break on the engine your back at the dealer they say they fix it but things fail one after another.... your best bet is not to end up at the dealer in the first place but this is not possible because you have a ticking time bomb. the next best option is to repair the problem before it causes other damage to the engine. not ideal. these mechanics that work at these dealers dont give a rats ass about your truck they may not install the part correctly as we now learned there is no real procedure to follow. still better option than letting the engine overhead when your driving uphill, towing or on a highway where you cant immediately pull over ans stop.

Add another to this issue. My L series 2 a few weeks back would ride at higher rpm. See the pic it stays about 3k on when in any gear/speed. This would cause the vehicle to overheat. When I came to a stop the vehicle would drop the rpm down and the low oil pressure light would come on.
They are telling me thermostat. We will see.

on top of this I can’t close my tailgate automatically. Won’t shut and get a “temp” unavailable”

I am having the same issue. Any update on your vehicle? As others have warned, I am concerned about the cascading of problems due to engine overheating.

I am currently broken down on side of road waiting for a Tow due to bad thermostat 2.5 miles from dealership. I miss my Hemi 5.7
my 2022 has the Hemi no issues! i have had those engines go 200k miles with no malfunction. I am very upset. FCA knows this is an issue and I just got the seat belt recall and this was not addressed!!!!!!!!

Did yours also do the rpm thing like mine did before it heated up?
