Wagoneer.
These two SUVs will be on the shortlist for many shoppers. Which is the better buy? Here's a quick comparison of some of the key specs and features to help you make an informed decision.
What the Chevy Suburban Gets Right
The Suburban’s greatest strength is its size. The redesigned Suburban dwarfs nearly everything on the road, including the Grand Wagoneer. The Grand Wagoneer has a maximum cargo capacity of 116.7 cubic feet, which is nothing to sneeze at — but it pales in comparison to the Suburban’s cavernous 144.7-cu-ft hold.
Despite its size, the Suburban is substantially cheaper than the Grand Wagoneer. In base trim, the Suburban costs about $32,000 less. Even in range-topping High Country form, with an optional 6.2-liter V-8, the Suburban is $10,000 cheaper than the Grand Wagoneer's MSRP.
Finally, the Suburban offers a turbodiesel powertrain. It isn’t what we’d call frugal, but with an EPA rating of 23 mpg combined, it’s more efficient than anything the Grand Wagoneer has to offer.
What the Jeep Grand Wagoneer Gets Right
The Grand Wagoneer may cost more than the Suburban, but it gets much more power. Its 6.2-liter V-8 makes an impressive 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque, which is enough for a maximum towing capacity of 9,860 pounds. The Suburban maxes out at 8,300.
The Grand Wagoneer puts heavy emphasis on features and technology. It has a much better set of standard safety tech, including adaptive cruise control and blind-spot monitors. Adaptive cruise control isn’t standard on any Suburban. The Grand Wagoneer also comes with an impressive infotainment setup, which runs through a 12-inch touchscreen and a premium sound system.
The Grand Wagoneer is much more luxurious than even the Suburban. Heated and ventilated Nappa leather front seats are standard. The trims only get more opulent, culminating in massage-capable seats, a night vision camera, and a 23-speaker sound system.
Different Personalities
Although both are large full-size SUVs, these two models have distinct personalities. The Suburban is all about magnitude, offering as much cabin space as you’ll find in most minivans. It’s cheaper than the Grand Wagoneer, but it’s also less refined.
The Grand Wagoneer dials luxury up to 11. It asks a premium price, but it’s a thoroughly premium experience.
Our Verdict
These SUVs have different mission statements, but the Grand Wagoneer does better at following through. Not much can beat the Suburban for space, but the Grand Wagoneer is a more pleasant car. Both the Grand Wagoneer and its little sibling, the Wagoneer, deserve a close look for SUV shoppers.
