Wagoneer L! Towing Test

New member! Just took delivery of my Wagoneer L about 5 days ago. Standard Output Hurricane engine, 20” wheels, tow package, sun roofs, etc etc.

Ordered it in mid January. They made good time! I’m super stoked with it so far. Only had it about a week so far. The “L” has so much room it’s crazy. Easily fit 8 adults comfortably plus room for all the cargo.
We are taking the family (2 adults, two kids, 1 Golden Retriever) on a 7 hour road trip to St George Utah. On the way there we will be towing a 24ft trailer with a 2009 Wrangler on it. On the way back we will add a 2 seater Polaris Razr, which will put it at just about 8,000-9,000 lbs.

Excited to see how this thing tows over long distances. I’ll upload pictures as we go! Only concern is I am not on air suspension like some of the upper trims. Just need to balance the trailer more carefully so there’s not too much tongue weight. Long time Jeep fan here as you can see.

@IronRidg Nice rig! Congrats. Some questions for you, if you don't mind:
Did you get yours tinted already? Seems that way. What percent tint did you go with on the front and back?
On your payload sticker, what is your payload rating?
Also how is the ride quality with the coil springs? Most professional reviews are those with the air springs.

Hey Moby! I didn’t tint it, it just came like that. If it came any lighter I was going tint it, but I think it looks good stock. Payload is 1300 or 1400 I think? Couldn’t find any info on the door.
Rides fine! I’ve had Jeeps with the air suspension, and I like the springs for their simplicity. It drives great and rides good

That's quite dark for stock privacy glass, but good on Jeep for doing that. But it looks like you're in one of the hotter parts of the country (so am I), and it'll definitely be worth it to get proper solar tint. Especially with all that glass this bus has.

I'm actually quite shocked by the payload you stated. I thought only the series 3 Grand Wagoneer had that low payload. Maybe because yours is the L and the new hurricane? I was more expecting between 1500 and 1600 lbs.
The team behind the Wagoneer design and marketing loves to tout the max tow rating, but if you load up it up with passengers and gear, you will be payload limited (tongue weight) way before you reach your towing weight limit. In my humble opinion.

I checked the sticker and it was 1,504lbs. The Wagoneer has been towing great all weekend. The standard output Hurricane is super awesome so far. Plenty of space for everyone. So far so good!

1504 lbs is a decent number, about in line with the competition given what you're equipped with. And from all reports Jeep/FCA/Stellantis knocked it out of the park with the new Hurricane (SO and HO).
Enjoy the wheeling!
Following as I currently have a Wagoneer series 2 on order I plan to use for towing my wrangler. Very interested to hear any details on how the SO I6 does towing long distances.

You may want to consider looking at a weight distribution hitch.

Sweet! Is yours an L or a standard length? air suspension?
Mine has been very good. Towing the Rzr and the Jeep home for 8 hours tomorrow. Luckily the trailer is balanced super well and the tongue weight is just right. There is plenty of power, and the built in controller makes stopping easy. Only thing I would change is stiffer rear end or air suspension.

I ordered a standard Wagoneer s2 with the air suspension and tow package. I'll probably be around 7500 pounds with my Jeep and 20ft trailer.

What kind of fuel mileage have you been seeing? looks like your around 7k lbs?
Testing right out of the gate! Nice!! It is appreciated - there is way too little towing info on these rigs. Did you look at oil temps? These little Hurricane engines have some great power numbers, but I am very curious how they do in dry, hot conditions.
For those wondering about GVWR/payload/weight numbers, I took mine to the scales last week. I have a base Wagoneer with 4x4 and the HD tow package. With a full tank of gas and 3 car seats in it, it weighed in at 6160 lbs (I subtracted my own weight). My door stickers say it has a payload capacity of 1574 lbs and a GVWR of 7650 lbs. The door sticker numbers correspond to a curb weight of 6076 lbs, which sounds about right. Axle weights were 3040 lbs (GAWR 3900) in the front and 3120 lbs (GAWR 4600) in the back. Plenty of headroom to put some GAMs in the back seat and still tow something substantial.

We towed our GWLSIII W/HD tow (HO I6) last couple weeks as well. I DID think at one point to page over to the temp screen on the cluster and check it out.. we had been driving for about two hours at that point and were on the final climb of the northbound "Grapevine" here in California (5 FWY between Santa Clarita and Bakersfield) Oil and coolant temps both got up to about 220 at the end of that pretty tough grade, but quickly dropped back to the 180ish within a couple miles of cresting. not sure if that's high or not for this vehicle, but that was 80-90 temps outside with a 7-8k trailer... along with A/C and all the creature comforts blasting (The messaging seats are awesome). I think the transmission temp stayed well under 200.

That's really good! 220 is nothing for an oil temp - that's a good indication the Hurricane can handle the towing. Thanks for the great info.
