2023 Wagoneer Series II Carbide 4x4 Fuel/Oil Warning Message

Hi All,
I just took delivery of a 2023 Wagoneer Series II Carbide 4x4 with the hurricane engine. So far, the car looks and drives well!

The Chrysler dealer who sold it to me from out of state was using it and put the first 1,700 miles on it. They shipped it to me from 800 miles away with a full tank of gas.

On day 2 of having it in my possession, and for the first time accelerating to over 50 mph, I received the attached message in the cluster: 'See User Manual for Proper Oil and Fuel'. This came on 2-3 times as I was driving it, usually when getting to the 50 mph mark. I thought it may just be that the car was giving me some tips for normal care, etc.

When accelerating to 70 mph for the first time, a new message appeared in the cluster: 'See Dealer, Service Engine'. No other lights, sounds, vibrations, etc. Just that message in the cluster. I happened to be just down the street from my local dealer, so I turned around and headed there. On the way, I contacted Wagoneer Client Services, and the Rep said that he had seen this happen before. The situation was rectified by draining the fuel system completely and refilling with premium gas. He said that 'these new turbo engines will require premium, even though that's not in the manual.' Since the car was running and I was already at the dealer, he told me he'd follow up with me after the holiday weekend.

The dealer's service center was backed up, but they brought in both senior service technicians as well as the service center manager to review this issue. When hooked up to the computer, there wasn't a single code out of order on the car. They hadn't even seen one of these new engines yet, so they didn't have any experience to go off of, but were skeptical that these engines will truly need premium. The Service Manager and I went for a 20 mile test drive, getting it up to 85 mph, and we could never replicate the message. The service manager believed that with a full tank of gas, while being delivered over 800 miles on a flat bed trailer, that vapors had built up within the fuel system, and potentially set off an emissions sensor. We left both scratching our heads.

We drove the car all weekend, and it was perfect, except for a brief message yesterday regarding the Proper Oil and Fuel. It disappeared shortly after it popped up.

Has anyone else come across these messages?

Same make/model- 6x you describe my exact experience. Premium doesn’t change anything. Dealership baffled.

False codes are symptoms of a bad battery, all modern cars a very picky about battery voltage, etc... AMG Batteries do not recover once fully discharged. Based on your brief story and given that you bought a used truck (1700 miles and out of state purchase) that the battery died at one point and was jumped.

Insist that your dealer does a battery load test (it takes 4 hours).

Also, insist that all TSB / software updates be applied. Search this forum for more information.

What if I did not buy a used one? Mine is straight from factory.

I'm guessing that it was filled using regular fuel and when you tried to accelerate fast, the engine started to experience a knock and it retarded and derated to prevent knocking and it triggered the warning. I'd fill up using premium and wait until you go through a tank or two then floor it on the highway and see if you see this message again. I'd also check the oil level and quality. If it is totally dark and dirty then change it with fresh oil.

Thanks AK. I haven't been able to replicate the message since that first week. I've filled up with Premium (75% of the time) since then.

I still can't quite come to grips that this engine MUST have Premium, when I haven't seen that formalized anywhere else. I'll keep y'all posted.
I have a 2023 Wagoneer series 2 carbide and the same message happened to me twice while accelerating quickly. I have been putting regular fuel line. Will try it with the premium fuel.

Hi Kate, Does Wagoneer Client Services have an official position on whether I6 Hurricane Wagoneers require Premium fuel vs. regular? Although I haven't seen this message since week one, I'd like to know if I am wasting money on continuing to purchase premium. Thanks!
