The Wagoneer is back and loaded with features to help it stand out in the full-size luxury SUV segment.

According to Jeep, it will redefine "American Premium" and the Grand Wagoneer Concept was an early look at how that will be accomplished with the production model, expected to arrive in mid-2021 as a 2022 model year vehicle. When that time comes, changes should be minimal.

That said, there's a lot to look forward to. The level of advanced technology, craftsmanship, stylish design, practicality and heritage found here shows how well Jeep can execute. It's the ultimate successor to what was an American icon, raises the bar for what this segment should offer and makes the nine year long wait worth it.

Glass Roof

One feature that really stands out, is the full-length single-pane glass roof that complements the ultra-premium interior by offering more natural lighting, a greater sense of space and breaktaking views for all occupants. It also helps to still experience Jeeps open-air freedom (minus the elements) that many love while on trails and even local roads.

Touchscreen Displays

The Grand Wagoneer Concept is tech-heavy, most noticeably with its 7 touchscreen that throughout the entire dashboard alone include: a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 12.1-inch main display in the center console, a 10.25-inch comfort display below, and first-ever a 10.25-inch passenger screen.

Hybrid Powertrain

Electrification is coming to the Wagoneer. It isn't clear what will be offered, all Jeep would say is that its a "no-compromise plug-in hybrid electric vehicle powertrain system" and that Jeeps with EV tech “will be the most efficient and responsible Jeep vehicles ever, providing absolute and quiet open-air freedom while taking performance, 4x4 capability and Jeep’s fun-to-drive experience to the next level."

4x4 Capability

Like its predecessor, “leading 4x4 capability” in a full-size luxury SUV will be offered here via three available 4x4 systems. Jeep wouldn’t go into detail on how it will be configured, but did highlight other systems that will complete the experience: the Quadra-Lift air suspension, premium driving dynamics with an independent front and rear suspension, unmatched towing capability, powerful performance and advanced technology.

The original Wagoneer offered “stately design that exuded class, elegance and a premium feel” which lives on in the Grand Wagoneer Concept. According to Ralph Gilles, head of design for FCA, “The Grand Wagoneer Concept is inspired by the original, but with a modern interpretation of luxury and freedom. We strived to create an elegant design with a timeless silhouette, featuring countless beautifully crafted details that come together to give it an undeniable presence."

LED lighting is everywhere and greatly enhances the Wagoneers appearance. Where it makes a real difference is with the distinctive headlamp and taillamp setups. Jeep explains that the “taillamps wrap from the rear quarter panel to the back of the vehicle and create a solid form, which allows the vehicle to achieve a more upscale appearance and complements the overall exterior design statement.” Meanwhile the iconic seven-slot grille is fully lit “to emphasize the width and overall front fascia of the vehicle” and surrounded by twin bi-functional LED projector headlamps to complete the look.

The Grand Interior

The interior is grand and seats up to seven passengers. Second row passengers get captain seats and the third row (a first for the Grand Wagoneer) is said to be spacious. Overall space should be well within the upper range of the full-size SUV segment, judging by its large glass windows, the rest of the interior and Jeep's theme of offering an ultra-comfortable cabin.

McIntosh Audio System

Among other firsts in the Grand Wagoneer Concept, is an audio system from McIntosh, a well known American home audio brand . As seen here “The Grand Wagoneer Concept’s McIntosh audio system features 23 custom-designed speakers connected to a 24-channel amplifier that provides an immersive audio experience.”

Premium Materials

No full-size luxury SUV is complete without the right materials and finishes. According to Jeep, what you see here is "influenced by both the American landscape and our industrious spirit, the interior features a collection of premium-wrapped materials, hand and heat-treated blackened lace-wood with raw accent edging and authentic dual-texture metal framing." It doesn’t get much better than this. What’s left now is to see exactly what materials, colors, trims and other options we’ll get to choose from.

Sustainable Materials

A number of sustainable appointments can be found throughout the interior: the mid-bolster onyx trim that runs the length of the instrument panel is made out of glass and fully recyclable, as well as the raw aluminum found above it and throughout the interior, a vast amount of genuine heat-treated lacewood, a full suede headliner made of Dinamica, premium carpets made from Thrive fiber and PUR to upholster all of the seating, console, door and instrument panel surfaces.
